A Look Back At The Foreshadowing From The Original Series

Game of Thrones Already Revealed How Rhaenyra Dies

A look back at the foreshadowing from the original series

If you recall Joffrey Baratheon's death in Game of Thrones' third season, you may have noticed a subtle nod to the future demise of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the prequel series House of the Dragon. When Joffrey is poisoned at his own wedding, one of the guests remarks, "The king is dead, long live the king." This line foreshadows Rhaenyra's own death, as she is killed by her half-brother Aegon II in a battle for the Iron Throne.

A brutal end

Rhaenyra's death is particularly brutal, even by the standards of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. She is burned alive by Aegon's dragon, Sunfyre. Her death is a major turning point in the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that tears Westeros apart.

Foreshadowing in Fire & Blood

Rhaenyra's death is also foreshadowed in the book Fire & Blood, upon which House of the Dragon is based. In the book, George R.R. Martin writes that Rhaenyra is "devoured by a dragon" during the Dance of the Dragons.
